FLAC make submission to Gender Recognition Advisory Group

The Free Legal Advice Centre  recently made a submission to the Gender Recognition Advisory Group regarding their proposals for Irish gender recognition legislation. The Group was set up by the government to give advice on gender recognition legislation. FLAC developed familiarity and expertise with legal developments in relation to transgender issues during the course of Dr. Lydia Foy’s case, which was based on her request to have a new birth certificate issued in her preferred gender.

The submission welcomes the Government’s commitment to introduce legislation to provide for legal recognition of transgender persons. It also makes note of the fact that legal issues constitute only one dimension of the problems facing transgender persons and that there are other areas that are vital to fully understanding the question. It also suggests that transgender persons and experts in the area be consulted and actively involved in the process of drafting the legislation.
